Domestic Violence Initiative
Denver, CO
Founded in 1985 for women with disabilites. DVI was created by Sharon
HIckman who saw that disabled women were not being included in the local
shelters and it has blossomed from there. DVI co-wrote a manual with NCADV
called "Open Mind Open Doors" that is a good primier for agencies looking
to make themselves accessible to women with disabilies. We also have also
promoted the knowledge that non-disabled women are more often disabled
from the violence in domestic situations.
